Commissioners seek $25,000 grant
By Barry H. Hendrix Managing Editor

The Clarke County Commission approved a resolution Tuesday to apply for a $25,000 law enforcement grant from ADECA (the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs). The approval was given during a quickly-called special meeting.

If the county receives the grant, the funding will be used to purchase fiber optic line to link the Sheriff's Department with E-911, said County Emergency Management Agency Director Roy Waite. Linking the two agencies will allow for cross referencing of outstanding warrants when a 911 call is received.

Other items to be purchased for the Sheriff's Department is new body armor for all the officers, a sniper rifle and additional radar equipment for five vehicles. The current body armor is 10 to 15- years-old, Waite said.

The county will pay a 10 percent match if the grant is awarded.

In addition, Waite received confirmation that the county had received a $34,888 Homeland Security grant, which will pay for EMA equipment.
