Red Ribbon Week a huge success
By Jake Paul Special to The Democrat

Students in Mrs. Teresa Coates' class released red balloons in front of Clarke County High School, celebrating National Red Ribbon Week, Oct. 23-31.

CCHS students committed to a drug-free lifestyle during the week, which was filled with several activities promoting a drug free lifestyle. On Monday, all students were greeted by the destruction drunk driving causes. A totaled SUV sat in front of Sage Auditorium for the week, reminding us of the danger of drinking and driving. Tuesday, students wore red shirts and red ribbons, the symbol of being drug free. Students came to school in crazy socks for "Sock it to Drugs Day," and everyone wore crazy ties on "Tie Up Drugs Day." On Friday, students wore their tennis shoes for "Sneak Up on Drugs Day."

The Red Ribbon Campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. This began the continuing tradition of displaying Red Ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of drugs.

The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a drug free America, and the faculty of CCHS helped enforce this great campaign in making the country drug free.
