Two drivers were injured Monday afternoon in a collision on Highway 43 south of Grove Hill. The accident occurred at approximately 4:50 p.m. at the 72-mile marker (near Southern Taxidermy), said Martha Earnhardt, Information Manager with the Alabama Department of Transportation.

The wrecked blocked the fourlane highway and backed up traffic in both directions.

Betina Johnson, 26, of Thomasville, was traveling north when she lost control and then swerved across the lanes into a truck driven by Christopher Washington, 39, of Mobile, going south. Her 2005 Nissan hit the diesel tank of the 2006 International truck, but not all the fuel spilled out, according to witnesses at the scene.

Both drivers were injured but apparently not seriously.

The female driver was transferred to Grove Hill Memorial Hospital. The truck driver was transferred to Jackson Medical Center. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, Earnhardt said.

The Clarke County Sheriff's Department, State Troopers and EMA officials responded to the accident. The incident remains under investigation by State Troopers.

Highway 43 was closed due to debris and spilled diesel fuel until approximately 6:30 p.m. when some southbound traffic was allowed through, said Roy Waite, Clarke County Emergency Management Director. All four lanes were open by 7 p.m.
