Jax Christmas Parade is Dec. 7

The Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Christmas Parade Friday, Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. The theme is "Winter Wonderland." There is an entry fee of $25. Checks should be made payable to the Jackson Area Chamber of Commerce.

Participants should pre-register by contacting the chamber office at 251-246-3251 so line-up may be determined.

There are four categories being judged this year:

1. Clubs and Non-Profit Organizations - cash prizes of $200, $150 and $100 will be awarded to the best floats.

2. Businesses and Industries - First and second place plaques will be awarded.

3. Bands -

This year participation is encouraged from all area bands. Cash prizes, $500 for first place, $250 for second place and $150 for third place will be awarded!

4. Other marching groups - First place plaques will be awarded.

Line-up for the parade will begin at 3:30 p.m. Marching groups can stage in the public lot across from Doshia's Restaurant on West Church Street. Floats should position at the four-way stop at Forest Avenue and West Church Street.

The parade route has been changed this year. It will begin at the four-way stop at Commerce Street and Broad Street and disband at Joe M. Gillmore Elementary School. Participants are asked to not throw any candy or other items until they turn the corner at the red light on Commerce and Broad Street.

Participants with small children walking in the parade who feel the route is too long, should make arrangements for the children to ride in the parade and dismount to perform for judges.

No one will be allowed to dangle legs freely from the side of floats, vehicles, etc. Four wheelers are strictly prohibited.

This year the judges will be set up at the Jackson Municipal Court in downtown Jackson. Make plans to slow down or have your band or group perform at that location. The judges will make their final decision at this point. Please make your performance for the judges brief. A performance too long may cause gaps in the parade line-up.

The winners will be announced via the local media the week following the parade. Prize money and trophies may be picked up at the Chamber during office hours the week following the parade.
