Blacksmithing new this year for Pioneer Day A variety of old-fashioned fun is planned at the Clarke County Museum's Eighth Annual Pioneer Day scheduled Saturday, Nov. 10 on the museum grounds in Grove Hill. The free event, held on the Museum grounds from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature costumed re-enactors demonstrating what life was like for this area's early settlers. Among the event's new demonstrators are blacksmiths Jay and E. Miller who will be forging oldfashioned square headed nails, horse shoes and other metal implements for visitors. Festival-goers will also be treated with tours of the newly restored Josiah and Lucy Mathews Cabin which was moved to the museum complex and restored this year. This will be the first opportunity for visitors to take a look at the early 1800s structure, and re-enactors in period costume will portray the Mathews family. Visitor favorite Blue Heron will once again set up his Creek Indian Hunting Camp and demonstrate tanning, cooking, weapons, and Creek strate tanning, cooking, weapons, and Creek War soldiers from 1812 will host a frontier encampment with demonstrations throughout the day. Sam Dale, hero of the Creek War, will also be on hand to tell visitors stories from Alabama's early frontier. Live western swing music will be played all day and local storytellers will swap tall tales. Other scheduled demonstrations include rope making, shingle splitting, candle dipping, flintknapping, corn shelling, chair caning, campfire cooking, cross-cut sawing and woodworking. Typical women's activities like soap making, quilting, clothes washing, rug hooking and butter churning will also be demonstrated. In addition there will be plenty of oldtimey games for the kids including making corn shuck dolls and hats. Concessions will be available. The museum will be open for tours and visitors will also be able to tour the Turner Corn Crib.
