The top-ranked Class 1A Sweet Water High School Bulldogs completed their regular season with a 9-0 record as they beat the Patriots of American Christian, ranked fifth in Class 2A, 40-7 last Friday night in Tuscaloosa.

The Bulldogs jumped out of the gate early as quarterback Drew Luker scored on a 26-yard keeper with 9:52 left in the first quarter. Scottie Nelson kicked the PAT, giving SWHS a 7-0 lead.

Just over two minutes later the Bulldogs added to their lead when fullback Anthony Landrum scored on a 30- yard sprint. The pass failed but with 7:37 left in the frame, Sweet Water increased their lead to 13-0.

Sweet Water's defense again shut down the ACA offense and got the ball back.

Luker capped the drive with a 3-yard sneak. Nelson's kick was good and the Bulldogs led 20-0 with 3:52 left in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs ran away with the game in the second quarter starting when Luker scored on a 3-yard run. The kick from Nelson was again good, making the score 27-0 with 11:02 left in the frame.

ACA answered with a 6-yard TD run and PAT, cutting into the lead 27-7 with 8:29 left in the second quarter.

The Sweet Water lead was increased when Landrum powered his way in from 5-yards out. Nelson was true on the kick and the Bulldogs had a 34-7 stranglehold over the Patriots.

Johnny Lockett ended the game's scoring in the third quarter with a 50-yard sprint, making the final score 40-7.

Landrum led all rushers with 133 yards on 22 carries and two scores. Butch Williams added 97 yards on nine carries. Lockett had 87 yards on six carries and a TD.

Luker was 5-of-8 passing for 93 yards.

Delano Brewer led the defense with 11 tackles. Luker had 10 stops and an interception. Travis Young and Jul Gaines each added an interception.

By beating the Patriots, Sweet Water has beaten teams, in larger classes, including Thomasville and Leroy, who have been ranked in the top five in their class.

This Friday the Bulldogs (9-0) host Providence Christian in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs.

Game time at 7 p.m. at Nolan Atkins Stadium-Victory Field.
