Hunting kicks off
Our Opinions

A Clarke County resident joked the other day that if you need to see a Mobile or Birmingham lawyer or doctor, don't make the trip but wait until the first week of hunting season. Most of them will be close by - in Barlow Bend, New Prospect or maybe Scyrene.

His point was that hunting is big business in Clarke County and that we draw hunters from around the state (and out of it too).

Deer season opens Saturday and continues through Jan. 15. Bow season has been in since Oct. 13 and will run until Jan. 31. But it is the gun season that draws the most folks and has the most interest.

Hunting is big business in Clarke County and other rural areas of the state. Hunters pay property owners to lease their properties. They plant game patches, buy ammo, food for the deer and other wildlife as well as for themselves, and spend money on camp houses of various descriptions- some are nothing more than shacks but others are nicer than some folks' full-time homes.

Some hunters get carried away by the sport and resort to illegal tactics or hunt across property lines on someone else's land. For the most part, though, our out-of-the-area hunters are good folks who contribute to our economy.

We wish them a happy and safe hunting season in Clarke County!
