Man charged with sending sex, violence text messages A Grove Hill man, described by law enforcement as a sexual predator, was captured in a TV show styled sting Nov. 5. Last week several females in the area began receiving sexually violent voice and text messages on their cell phones. Investigator Ron Baggette with the Clarke County Sheriff's Department was in the process of investigating the case when one of the victims contacted him and told him she was receiving another message. "We got her phone and answered him. We sent text messages back and forth and finally set up a meeting. He wanted the victim to come to his house, but we convinced him to meet her at a safe place, which was the parking lot of Dunn's Exxon in Grove Hill. "We sent her there, with an officer lying down in her back seat and we had other officers in the parking lot waiting. The subject, Thomas Smith, walked to Dunn's and did surveillance of the area for about an hour before he approached the car. When he did approach the officer jumped out of the car. He tried to run but by then the rest of us had run up and we caught him," Baggette said. Smith has allegedly contacted at least six females, leaving messages. "When these women didn't answer him, his messages would get more violent. There's no telling what he would have done if one of these women had rejected him face-to-face. If anyone has received any messages like this and hasn't reported it, they need to contact me at the Clarke County Sheriff's Department," Baggette added. Smith was charged with two counts of stalking.
Officers involved in the arrest include Baggette, Alabama Game and Fish Officer Robbie Tillman, Sergeant Maurice Dyess and Don Lolley with the District Attorney's office.
