Shewmake Charlie Burrel Shewmake Sr., 91, a longtime resident of Montgomery died Nov. 9, 2007 at the Community Hospital in Tallassee. He was a native of Clarke County and grew up near Coffeeville. Locals still refer to the homestead location as "the Shewmake Place." He was chairman and owner of Algernon Blair, Inc., an international construction company with headquarters in Montgomery. The Blair Companies represented one of the largest contracting firms in Alabama with in-process projects often exceeding $350 million in annual volume. The companies' work spanned the globe but some Montgomery projects included the former Union Bank Tower, Baptist East Hospital, Wachovia Bank's headquarters, the main post office on Catoma Street and several estate homes in the Garden District. Mr. Shewmake donated resources to help restore and preserve historic buildings, including the original Confederate Post Office in Montgomery. He was a supporter of the YMCA, United Way, the University of Alabama and other civic and community projects. Survivors include his wife, Alice White Shewmake of Birmingham; daughter Sherrel S. (Haygood) Tatum, Tallassee; a daughter-inlaw, Charlotte S. Shewmake, Montgomery; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas J. and Mattie Clanton Shewmake of Clarke County and a son, C. Burrel Shewmake Jr. of Montgomery and his five brothers and sisters.
The funeral was held Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. at Leak Memory Chapel with burial in the Greenwood Cemetery.
