Defense paces CCHS to 46-0 playoff win
Tim Barnett took the opening kickoff from the Bobcats and raced 70-yards for the touchdown. Mark Lambert converted the point-after try and CCHS led 7-0 with 11:47 left in the first quarter. Beulah was able to move to the Bulldog 46-yard line when Kenneth Kimbrough stepped in front of a Bobcat pass. The senior took the interception 53- yards in the opposite direction for the Clarke County touchdown. The attempt was no good but the Bulldogs had a 13-0 lead with 7:06 left in the period. On the ensuing possession Dwayne Owens picked off the pass on the second play from scrimmage and returned it 25- yards for the next CCHS score with 6:14 left in the frame. The try for two came up short but the Bulldogs had a 19-0 lead without the offense having played one single down. Early in the second quarter Beulah was able to march down to the Bulldog 17-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. Going to the air, Tyler Walker tossed an 18-yard completion to Bubba Frazier and a 17-yard hook-up with Owens to help move the ball downfield. Frazier capped the drive with an 11-yard run. Again the try for two came up short, but Clarke County had a 25-0 lead with 8:00 minutes to go before halftime. The defense, which leads the entire state, allowing just under 1.7 points per game to Class 3A opponents, forced another punt. Three penalties saw the ball on the CCHS 26-yard line and the Bulldogs facing first-and-30. From there Walker tossed a 74- yard TD pass to Frazier. Tim Barnett ran in the 2-point conversion, increasing the stranglehold to 33-0 with 3:28 left in the second quarter. Barnett sprang free for a 70- yard touchdown in the closing seconds of the half but the score was brought back with a holding penalty. Early in the third quarter the Bulldogs saw a scoring opportunity slip away with a fumble in the endzone. On the second play Frazier intercepted the Bobcat pass and returned it 30-yards for the touchdown. Lambert kicked the PAT, making it 40-0 with 9:15 left in the quarter. The game's final points came with 11:12 left in the game when Britt Chapman broke free on a 64-yard TD run. The try failed but the Bulldogs led 46-0. The combination of the second and third defense held up the shutout as they turned Beulah away at the CCHS 1-yard line, ensuring the 46-0 shut-out win. This Friday the Bulldogs (11-0) host the Pirates of Winfield (10-1) in the second round of the playoffs. "We really want to see our fans come out this week," Coach Allan Floyd said. "The same kind of support we saw when we played Thomasville. If they come out with the same attitude it would be tremendous. "Our crowd and their intensity was a deciding factor in the game with Thomasville," he added. Winfield beat Elba 32-6 last week to advance to the second round.
Game time at H.G. Prim Stadium is 7 p.m.
