Congressman Davis presents grant to THS
By Barry H. Hendrix Managing Editor

Congressman Artur Davis presents a check to the Thomasville City School System Monday afternoon to fund distance learning. One problem - the amount is wrong on the large check. The amount of the grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture is actually $209,000. U.S. Representative Artur Davis spoke to faculty, staff and students Monday in the Thomasville High Gymnasium.

The congressman came to THS to deliver a $209,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant, which will fund distance learning for the elementary, middle and high schools.

The Democratic officeholder called the Thomasville City School System one of the best in West Alabama, but then he asked the students "how many of you want to come back and live in Thomasville when you graduate from college?"

"I didn't see enough hands go up….I think a lot of you believe you have to go elsewhere to earn as much money as you want to earn and to live out your dreams.

"…What I am trying to do, what the superintendent…(and) mayor is trying to do is build a path so that to live your dreams, you don't have to go to Atlanta (or) Mobile," Davis said. "You can stay right here in Thomasville."

The distance learning program will be a partnership with Vanderbilt University. "Thomasville schools will have access to a world of content," said Patsy Partin, director of Vanderbilt's Virtual School. Partin worked with Ruby O'Bryant, System Technology Cooridnator, to apply for the grant for the video conferencing technology.

Members of the Thomasville City Council, City Board of Education and the Clarke County Commission were also on hand for the ceremony.

"This is an exciting day," said city school superintendent Dr. Vic N. Adkison. "…We are going to expand our learning beyond the school walls. The opportunities we will have will be limitless, but this is only the beginning for many great things to come."
