New owner and new name for longtime local motel
By Barry H. Hendrix Managing Editor

Jay Bhatt with his wife, Puni, and their youngest daughter, Janir. "I want a good family atmosphere, Bhatt said.
Jay Bhatt may be a native of India, but from the first time he opens his mouth, you can hear how his over 20 years of experience in the American motel business has changed his accent. His time in Indiana, South Dakota, Illinois, Louisiana and Tennessee has certainly influenced his speech.

Bhatt is the new owner of what used to be called the Windwood Inn on Jackson Street in Grove Hill. The new name for the locally owned motel is the Wind Tree Inn, but that is not the only change Bhatt intends to bring to the establishment.

Bhatt came to Grove Hill recently after managing a Hampton Inn in Dixon, Tenn., but he has worked with Super 8 and many other motel franchises. He had planned to study dentistry in college "but somehow I ended up in this business."

However, "I love people. I love talking to people." He has received great feedback already from community leaders and customers for the changes made to the motel. "I want a good family atmosphere," Bhatt said.

Both buildings and all the air conditioning units have been power washed, he said. All the carpets have been cleaned. The carpets and furniture will eventually be replaced.

"It's a very nice and clean property." Customers are looking for quality, he said. "They don't mind paying the money, but they are looking for quality…. Even though this is a local motel, I don't treat it as a local motel. I treat it as a franchise motel."

A motel has existed at the Jackson Street site for 50 years, Bhatt said. It was originally called the Travel Inn.

He is also developing a new website for the motel.

Bhatt and his wife Puni have two teenagers, Monica and Nevil, who attend Clarke County High School, and Janri, a preschooler.
