Our Opinions
A time to be thankful

Thanksgiving is a Rodney Dangerfield-like holiday - it gets no respect. Halloween has become a bigger holiday than Thanksgiving and by the time November rolls around, Christmas decorations are going up everywhere, Christmas open houses are underway and the season is going full blast.

Thanksgiving is just another day off and a time to overeat- as though most of us don't everyday.

We may not think so but we have a lot to be thankful for. Sure, there is unrest and war in the world. We question the competence of our national leaders and the ability of our government to do the things it ought to be doing. We wonder how the younger generation will ever make it. All of these problems have been around for a long time and will be around for a long time to come.

Somehow or other, the world manages to keep turning. We detest war and unrest but it has been around for a while. Our government has its flaws but is still the best in the world. Some of our leaders aren't what they ought to be but we always manage to survive. Every younger generation is perceived as going to the dogs but yet they step up to the plate when the time comes.

As the adjacent cartoon implies, we aren't always as appreciative of our many blessings as we should be.

We are blessed and we should be more willing to voice our thankfulness for our blessings and to share our bounty with those less fortunate.

We laugh too little these days. Laughter is medicine for the soul and we need to laugh more at each other and more importantly at ourselves. Too many of us take ourselves entirely too seriously.

So, chomp down on that turkey leg Thursday and smile when you do it. Forget the troubles of the world for the day and be thankful.
