"After approving unification of the three branches of Methodism and condemning the state liquor store plan in Alabama, the one hundred ninety-fifth session of the Alabama Conference, Methodist Episcopal Church, South, came to an end at Marianna, Florida Sunday…A. G. Ellisor, popular pastor of the Grove Hill charge was returned for the fourth successive year."

"The record football crowd of the season is expected to be on hand Thanksgiving night for the annual Grove Hill-Jackson game. Interest is at high pitch, especially in our neighboring town, where the Aggies are reported to be making elaborate preparations to win in such a decisive manner as will salve the wound left by the Bulldogs' thorough and unexpected trouncing of the Aggies last year."

"A choice Thanksgiving menu, including turkey, will be served by Paramount Café at regular prices. Eat there and save trouble and expense."

The end of a Thanksgiving editorial: "And let us be thankful finally that we live in one of the most favored sections of this favored land, where the suns of summer are no hotter than those of other regions and where the winds of winter are seldom more than gentle zephyrs; where nature smiles the year round and where we live in peace and contentment with others… Let us put aside the little troubles of today and enjoy the rich heritage which is ours."

Nov. 25, 1937

40 years ago

"The construction of the new C.C.H.S. library is under way. It is expected to be completed about the last of 1968. The job is being done by the Southwest Construction Co. of Chatom."

"The Clarke County Commissioners Court has elected to participate in the Food Stamp Program of the United States Department of Agriculture…."

"Deputies Doug Knight and Ben Dunn…uncovered 11 gallons of moonshine that had been buried in the woods near Thomasville."

A large group from Grove Hill and Clarke County went to Montgomery to petition for Hill-Burton funds for construction of a new hospital in Grove Hill. Hospital Building Authority Chairman Merwin B. York said in a separate article, "Although we have no official word on the success of our effort, our group is continuing to face the future with confidence."

A one-lb. can of Maxwell House Coffee was 59 cents at the Grove Hill Piggly Wiggly. However, you had to buy $7 worth of groceries to get that special price.
