Tigers explode for 58-34 win over Fayette County

The Thomasville Tigers piled up 532 yards of offense on their way to a 58-34 victory over the Fayette County Tigers in the second round of the playoffs last Friday at D. F. Anderson Field in Thomasville.

Leading the Thomasville ground game which accounted for 392 yards was Delvonte Harris with 220 yards on 16 carries. James White was next with 76 yards on seven carries while Roya Campbell had 61 yards, one touchdown, and two 2-point conversions on nine carries and Alex Buford had 44 yards and two touchdowns on six carries.

In the air Alex Buford was 9 of 13 for 140 yards and five touchdowns with one interception. Leading the way on the receiving end of Buford's passes were: Tysean Thompson with three catches for 62 yards and two touchdowns; Kenny Sanders with two catches for 56 yards and two touchdowns; and Shed Simmons with two catches for 15 yards and one touchdown.

Over on defense Jarrell Watters led the charge with eight tackles followed by Alex Buford, Courtney Campbell and James Jones with seven apiece.

Thomasville took an early lead with a 15-yard TD pass from Alex Buford to Tysean Thompson with 8:40 remaining in the first quarter. Cameron Dunagan added the extra point and Thomasville led 7- 0.

Fayette County answered the Thomasville score on their next possession with a TD and 2-point conversion and with 7:45 to play in the quarter Thomasville trailed 8-7.

The Tigers bounced right backwhen Buford hooked-up with Sanders on a 34-yard strike. Dunagan kicked the extra-point and Thomasville had regained the lead at 14-8 with 5:48 left in the first period.

Fayette County marched right back down the field on their next series, and scored on a 6-yard pass and 2-point conversion to take a 16-14 lead.

Buford scored on a 16-yard jaunt to cap a later THS drive. Roya Campbell blasted his way in with a 2-point conversion and Thomasville was up 22-16 with 7:58 to play in the second quarter.

Fayette County returned the ensuing kickoff to the Thomasville 2-yard line. From there they punched it in tying the score at 22- 22 with 6:50 remaining in the second quarter.

Fayette County converted a THS turnover into points as they scored on a 7-yard touchdown run to put them in the lead again. The try for two failed and Fayette County led 28-22 with 2:03 yet to play in the second quarter.

Buford hit Sanders with a 23-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing possession. Dunagan tacked on the extra-point and Thomasville was back on top 29-28 with 1:28 left until intermission.

Thomasville scored again after Campbell intercepted a Fayette pass, giving the ball back to the offense.

Buford fired a 23-yard strike to Thompson in the corner of the endzone with :15 showing on the first half clock. Campbell barreled in with the 2-point conversion and Thomasville took a 37-28 lead to the locker room.

Thomasville scored on their first possession of the second half when Buford waltzed in from 15-yards out. Dunagan nailed the extrapoint and with 10:51 remaining in the third quarter Thomasville had extended their lead to 44-28

Thomasville added to their lead again on Buford's touchdown pass to Shed Simmons on a 12-yard score. Dunagan's extra-point split the uprights and the Thomasville lead stood at 51-28 with 11:18 remaining in the final period.

Fayette County would not go away and scored one final time on a 25 yard pass with 9:21 left in the game. Thomasville stopped the two point conversion again but the lead had been cut to 51-34.

Thomasville scored once more with 7:20 to play when Campbell rumbled in from 10-yards out. Harrison Lewis added the extrapoint making the final 58-34.

The 10-2 Tigers will be matchedup with the 11-1 Handley Tigers who beat the Trinity Wildcats 28-14 this past Friday.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at D. F. Anderson Field in Thomasville.
