Bears have no trouble beating Pickens County 52-26 to advance
By Jeremy Sellers

The Leroy Bears have now won seven consecutive playoff games and 21 consecutive 2A games as they (11-1) rolled to a 52-26 win over the Pickens County Tornadoes Friday night at Palmer Stadium in Leroy.

On Leroy's first drive and second play from scrimmage, Clint Moseley hooked up with Patrick Rivers for a 78-yard touchdown pass reception to give the Bears an early lead.

Moseley dove in for the 2-point conversion to give Leroy the 8-0 lead with 11:16 left in the first quarter of play.

Moseley was 10-18 for 329 yards and four touchdowns.

The Tornadoes answered on their ensuing drive on a 72-yard touchdown pass from Jematric Curry to Mardrecas Hood. Their two-point conversion failed and Leroy led 8-6 with 9:34 left in the first quarter.

Leroy took a 14-6 lead when Michael Bracy took a handoff 16 yards for a touchdown with 4:28 left in the first quarter of play. The PAT was no good by Paul Gartman.

Pickens County fought back to make it a 14-12 ball game with 1:36 left in the first quarter when Curry hooked up with Hood again, this for a 90-yard touchdown reception. Their two-point conversion once again came up short.

On Leroy's next drive, Moseley hooked up with Johnny Williams for an 84-yard touchdown pass reception in what looked like it would be an offensive shoot-out. Gartman nailed his extra point to give Leroy the 21-12 lead at the start of the second quarter.

With 20 seconds left in the first half, Moseley found Stephen Scoggins on a 15-yard touchdown pass to extend the Leroy lead to 28-12 and give the Bears a little cushion heading into the half.

Moseley hooked up with Scoggins once again midway through the third quarter to give Leroy the 35-12 lead following Gartman's extra point.

Scoggins hauled in two receptions for 45 yards and two touchdowns.

Bracy busted another run with 6:20 left in third to blow the game open at 42-12. Gartman once again added his extra point.

Paul Gartman hit a 35-yard field goal later in the third to push the Leroy lead to 45-12. Pickens answered with a 24-yard touchdown strike from Curry to Markeithton Hall and a 15-yard touchdown pass to Demarco Hall, all in the fourth quarter.

Leroy's final score came on a 35-yard Ryan Daugherty to Phillip Ervin scoring strike.

Aerik Davis grabbed five receptions for 82 yards to lead the Leroy receivers. Johnny Williams had one catch for 84 yards and a touchdown. Patrick Rivers had one grab for 79 yards and a touchdown.

Michael Bracy had five carries for 53 yards and two touchdowns.

Leroy will host Lanett (12-0) at Palmer Stadium this Friday night in the third round of the state playoffs. The winner of that game will face the winner of American Christian and Cottonwood.
