The magical season for the Clarke County High School Bulldogs came to an end last Friday as they fell 20-7 to the Eagles of Calera in the quarterfinals of the Class 3A state playoffs.

"This team has done so much this season," Coach Allan Floyd said. "I am so proud of the seniors and their leadership. This team has nothing to hang their head about.

"The next teams have something to build on, based on the play of this team," he added. "Now we will get started on getting ready for next year."

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead as Tim Barnett scored on a 65-yard sprint through the middle of the Eagle defense.

Mark Lambert converted the kick and CCHS led 7-0 with 8:15 left in the period.

The two teams traded punts, but late in the first quarter Calera was able to get a hand on a CCHS punt and the Eagles started their drive at the Bulldog 28-yard line.

It took seven plays before Earl Haynes capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge. The attempt struck the uprights and the Bulldogs held onto a 7-6 lead with 1:36 left in the frame.

Calera then added a 1-yard run from Dominique Wilson and a 19-yard pass from Paul Winterbottom to Haynes. Wilson ran in a 2-point conversion and the Eagles led 20-7 with 4:32 left in the first half.

CCHS put together a potential scoring drive late in the half but the drive ended with an interception in the endzone and Calera took the 20-7 lead into the break.

Early in the third quarter the Bulldog defense forced a turnover with Ottis Jackson recovering a fumble. An added personal foul penalty set the ball at the Eagle 4-yard line.

CCHS was unable to advance any closer and turned the ball over on downs.

Barnett ended one Calera drive with an interception and Justin Robinson halted another with a fumble recovery but the offense was unable to get untracked and the Eagles won the game 20-7 to advance to the semi-finals and a date with Cordova.

Tyler Walker was 6-of-17 passing for 92 yards. Dwayne Owens caught 4 passes for 67 yards.

Barnett had 101 yards rushing on 16 carries and a score.

The Bulldogs ended the season with a 12-1 record. The 12 wins is a school record, as was the first perfect regular season
