Bears win 18-12 in OT
A capacity crowd at Palmer Stadium got to watch free football as the game ended in regulation at a 12-12 tie. The Bears had the ball first in the extra frame. Facing third-and-goal from the 7-yard line, QB Clint Moseley powered in for the touchdown. Leroy attempted the old "swinging gate" on the conversion attempt, but failed, increasing the score to 18- 12. Lanett, was backed up by a 15-yard penalty and then threw four incomplete passes and Leroy held on to win 18-12 and advance. In regulation play the Leroy defense had held off an early threat after the Bears fumbled the opening kickoff at their 31-yard line. The Panthers attempted a 44-yard field goal, but the kick came up short. Leroy's offense then got untracked as Moseley tossed a 26-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Scoggins. The try for two was no good but the Bears had a 6-0 lead with 6:34 left in the first period. Kicker Paul Gartman had his appendix removed Wednesday, prior to the game Friday, leaving him unavailable for the Lanett contest. Lanett answered the Leroy touchdown when Lamarcus Wright scored on a 2-yard keeper. The score was set up by a 41- yard completion from Wright to Mico Jones. The attempt was no good and the game was knotted at 6-6 with 9:14 left in the first half. Late in the half the Bears appeared to take the lead when a Panther ball carrier was tackled in the end zone, but the player was ruled down short of the goal and the game remained 6-6 at the break. In the third frame Lanett took the lead as Wright tossed an 18-yard pass to Jones. Leroy's Josh Trotter blocked the PAT as the Panthers took a 12-6 lead with 6:36 left in the frame. On the ensuing kick off Phillip Ervin took the ball down to the Lanett 28- yard line. Six plays later fullback Detrik Powell powered in from 3-yards out. A bad snap on the conversion attempt left the game tied at 12-12 with 3:32 left in the third. Neither team scored in the fourth period, setting up the overtime play. Moseley paced the Leroy offense with 61 yards on 15 carries and a score. He was 7-of-16 passing for 117 yards and a TD. This Friday the Bears (13-1) take to the road as they go to Tuscaloosa to play American Christian in the semi-finals of the Class 2A playoffs.
