The Power of a Gift'
By Rev. Dave W. Rhodes, pastor, Grove Hill United Methodist Church

When anyone thinks of Christmas, one of the first things that comes to mind are gifts. We enjoy the gifts our friends and family give to us as well as the ones we have the privilege to give. The great tradition of giving and receiving gifts at Christmas time is traced back to the gift we all received at the manger.

We all have memories of gifts that we never put to use and gifts that we used for years and years. Then, there are the few and precious gifts that made a significant difference in our lives. Many of these gifts weren't wrapped or found under a Christmas tree. The greatest thing about this kind of gift is that the gift not only enriched your life, but also allowed you to give to others.

In a nutshell, that is the message of all of our Christmas festivities. We give to others because we first have received from Christ. Christmas is a peculiar time of year in that millions of people the world over, without thinking about it, honor Christ by giving gifts.

As we enjoy our families, friends, and traditions this Christmas, let's also focus on the deeper meaning of Christmas. We need to remember those in need this Christmas; our Lord did that for us. One of the strangest things I find myself saying is that we need to remember to be faithful to worship the one who came at Christmas. In our church we will be offering several great opportunities to do this and we must do this as well in our homes.

I wish you a Christ-filled Christmas.
