Congratulations, teams
Our Opinions

It has been quite a season for football. And we aren't necessarily talking about college football, although Alabama and Auburn and other college teams have been interesting this year.

We're talking about the sports' grassroots- high school football. Teams throughout the region have had remarkable seasons and they all deserve a hearty congratulations.

Leroy and Sweet Water will be back at Birmingham's Field this week for championship title games. Sweet Water will play Talladega County-Central for the 1A title Thursday at 3 p.m. The top-ranked Bulldogs beat No. 3 Maplesville 46-36 last Friday in the semi-finals in Sweet Water. Sweet Water won the 1A title last year and has made the Birmingham Super 6 three times in the last four years. The Bulldogs also won the 1A title in 2004.

Leroy won a thrilling semifinal game Friday to earn a chance to retain the state 2A title it won last year. The Bears defeated American Christian of Tuscaloosa, winning on a 60- yard pass play 42-35 in the final 38 seconds of the game. The Bears are ranked third and will play No. 1 Fyffe Friday at 3 p.m.

The Thomasville High Tigers had a heartbreaker Friday as they lost to Central of Tuscaloosa 28-27 in the 4A semi-finals. Central, ranked second, scored with just under two minutes left in the game to defeat No. 7 Thomasville. Thomasville played for a state 4A title last year and had hoped to return this year.

The 3A Clarke County High School Bulldogs deserve recognition too for an excellent season. They had a perfect 10-0 season, the first ever since the school started playing football back in the early years of the 20th century. They played well in the playoffs until they were defeated by Calera a couple of weeks ago, ending their 2007 run at 12-1. Coach Allan Floyd and his players are to be commended.

Grove Hill's Clarke Prep School, a longtime independent school association contender and state champion winner, also had a good season but fell one game short of making its championship games in Troy. Coach Billy Hamilton and his squad deserve salutations too.

Football is just a game, we have to remind ourselves every now and then. But it builds character, teamwork and a successful program contributes greatly to a school's pride and well-being as well as that of the community it represents.

Thursday and Friday we all need to be pulling for the Leroy Bears and the Sweet Water Bulldogs as they play to bring state trophies home to southwest Alabama!
