LP accepts first timber for OSB mill
By Jim Cox Editor & Publisher

Fulton Logging and Silver Creek Logging delivered the first loads of wood Tuesday.
The first loads of timber for the new Louisiana Pacific oriented strand board (OSB) mill were delivered Tuesday and a brief ceremony noted the milestone in the progress of the new $230 million industry located off Highway 43 south of Thomasville.

The tree-length young pine timber came in aboard Fulton Logging and Silver Creek Logging trucks. LP employees and management personnel attended as did county officials, Thomasville officials and others.

Plant Manager Steve Doffitt used a huge pair of wooden scissors to cut red ribbons in front of each truck as Debra Bolen of the Clarke County Economic Development Partnership assisted.

Tommy Thompson of LP said Tuesday that the plant is still on line to start producing OSB by the beginning of the new year. To date, approximately 120 of the expected 140 full time workers have been hired. The plant has been predicted to generate an additional 300 spin-off jobs.

The LP plant was announced in December 2004 and Gov. Bob Riley attended a formal groundbreaking in September 2005. As many as 500 construction workers have been employed at the site as work has progressed since then.
