Moseley's TD last second TD pass lifts LHS Bears
Quarterback Clint Moseley broke open a tied game with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Rivers with :38 seconds left to play. Paul Gartman converted the point-after touchdown to give the Bears the win and a ticket to the Super Six in Birmingham. Moseley, who was named the Alabama Sports Writers Association's Prep Offensive Player of the Week, finished the game passing for 308 yards on 15-of-28 passing. He also rushed for 164 yards on 14 carries and a score. Detrick Powell had 86 yards on 14 carries and two scores. Rivers caught six passes for 144 yards and a TD. The Patriots, led by Bama commitment Brad Smelley, took the lead in the game with a 3-yard run from Smelley with 11:30 to go in the second quarter. Blake Brenton kicked the PAT as ACA took a 7-0 lead. The Bears answered just over a minute later when Moseley scored on a 42-yard sprint. Moseley ran for 19-yards on the first play. Gartman kicked the PAT and the game was tied at 7-7 with 10:43 to go before halftime. With 6:01 to go before the break Powell plowed into paydirt with a 6-yard run. Gartman's kick increased the lead to 14-7. The Patriots responded with a 6-yard pass from Smelley to Johnny Shuttlesworth. Brenton's kick knotted the game at 14-14 with :20 seconds left before the half. Midway through the third quarter the Patriots retook the lead when the Smelley to Shuttlesworth connection worked again. This time on a 62-yard pass with 7:55 left in the period. Brenton's kick gave ACA a 21-14 lead. Like a heavy-weight boxing match, Leroy returned the punch when Powell found the endzone on a 2-yard run. Gartman tied the game at 21-21 with his PAT at the 5:18 point of the period. Moseley tossed a 49-yard pass to Rivers in the scoring drive. The Bear defense stepped up their play and forced a Patriot punt. Grant Brown gathered in the kick at his 40-yard line and returned it 60-yards for the Leroy touchdown. Gartman converted the kick and the Bears had a 28-21 lead with 6:46 to go in the game. American Christian kept the tension for the fans as they took the ensuing possession and scored when Smelley hit Scott Davis with a 4-yard TD pass. Brenton's kick tied the game at 28-28 with 4:51 left in the game. Leroy responded when Michael Bracy scored on an 18- yard sprint with 2:16 left in the game. Gartman made the kick and the Bears had a 35-28 lead. ACA made things interesting when Smelley threw a 31-yard scoring pass to Heath Minor with :53 seconds to go in the game. Brenton made the kick and the game was tied at 35-35. The Patriots had a short squib kick, giving the Bears the ball at their own 40-yard line, setting up the game winning strike from Moseley to Rivers. American Christian got the ball back with a short field. The first three passes fell incomplete and the fourth was picked off by Brandon Jones, sealing Leroy's 42-35 win. This Friday the Bears (13-1) take on Fyfee (14-0) in the Super Six Class 2A state title game.
