Community Calendar GHMH Tree Lighting Grove Hill Memorial Hospital Auxiliary's Tree Lighting will be held Thursday, (tonight) Dec. 13 at 6 p.m. at the hospital. Refreshments will be served in the hospital's lobby after the program. As always, a list of Honorees and Memorials will be displayed at the hospital for viewing. Forms for submitting names for a tree light can be found in The Clarke County Democrat and at the hospital. HIV Prevention Group meets The December meeting of the Public Health Area 9 HIV Prevention Community Network Group will take place Friday, Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. in the Monroe County Health Department in Monroeville. This luncheon meeting is open to anyone wishing to help in the fight against HIV. Bring a covered dish and join in. SWAIA annual banquet Southwest Alabama Improvement Association, (SWAIA) announces its support of the Clarke County Chapter-National Association for the Advancement of Colored Peoples (NAACP) seventh annual banquet on Saturday, Dec. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Fulton Head Start Building. SWAIA is pledging its support in honor of Dr. Edward Vaugh, state president, NAACP, Thedford Rowser- Bey, State Chairperson (NAACP) for Black Land Lost and Real Estate Issues, as well as Mrs. Edna Thornton, age 102 and Rosa V. Thornton, age 83 and Charlie (Jackie) Kimbrough, land issues in the First Circuit Court Judicial District (Washington, Clarke and Choctaw County). The guest speaker will be Elder Jimmy Allen, pastor of the Church of God in Christ, Thomasville. The cost of this banquet is $25 per person. Dixons Mills Christmas parade The Dixons Mills Christmas parade will be Saturday, Dec. 15 at 10 a.m. The theme for this year's parade is "Have A Holly Jolly Christmas." The entry fee is $25 for everyone except school groups. If you would like to set up a booth for the arts and crafts, food, etc. the setup fee is $25 with all proceeds going to the Dixons Mills Volunteer Fire Department. If you would like to participate in the parade contact Joyce White at 334-992- 2287. Pictures with Santa will also be available. The parade is sponsored by the Splendid Harmony Social and Savings Club and the Dixons Mills Volunteer Fire Department. VFW Christmas dinner VFW Post 5106 and its Ladies Auxiliary will hold its regular monthly meeting and Christmas dinner Monday, Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at The Garden in Thomasville. All members are urged to come out and bring your spouse to show appreciation for what they have done for the VFW this year. Dutch treat. AseraCare Hospice memorial tree The community is invited to take part in decorating a holiday memorial tree in the office of AseraCare Hospice, at 4115 College Avenue in the Dollar General Shopping Center near Wal-Mart. Those wishing to participate may bring an ornament with the person's name on it they wish to remember. Paper ornaments will be supplied free of charge for participants to write the name of their loved one, along with a personal message. The tree, donated by Quincey Baros of Southern Lawn and Garden will be on display through Christmas. New Year's Eve singing There will be a New Year's Eve singing at Good Hope Baptist Church Monday, Dec. 31 at 6 p.m. featuring the Revelators, The Kelleys and Mallory Broadus. Deadline on taxes nears Clarke County Revenue Commissioner Chris Beverly reminds property owners that Dec. 31, 2007 is the deadline to pay ad valorem taxes. He points out that paying your taxes by mail is the best way to avoid lines in the courthouse. All payments by mail received with a postmark on or before Dec. 31 will not be charged late penalities. December 31, 2007 is also the deadline for making new applications for homestead exemptions and current use and to file returns for business personal property. Free holiday cookbooks The annual Holiday Cookbook is now available at The Clarke County Extension Office at the Clarke County Courthouse. It's free so go by there and pick one up.
