Fulton chooses AlaTax to process business licenses
By Barry H. Hendrix Managing Editor

The Fulton Town Council voted Tuesday night to have AlaTax of Birmingham collect and process business licenses. The company already collects sales taxes for the town.

AlaTax will collect $7.95 for every business license they collect.

The council discussed changes to the business license fees in accordance with the Municipal Business License Reform Act, passed by the State Legislature in 2006. The fee changes have to be made by Dec. 31, 2007.

The council will continue to work up to that date on changes to the fee structure. There has not been a change since 1972. "Some of them are not going up very much," said Mayor Mike Norris. "Some of them are going up a good bit….I don't see us collecting $5,000 more than we have for the first year."

The mayor said he had negotiated with the local Scotch Lumber Company and Scotch Plywood Company for increases. Norris also added that the two companies have been highly supportive in their financial contributions to the town - "anything that we need for the fire department and the town.

"…We are definitely not going to run off anybody. That's why we contacted our biggest merchants and talked to them."

Businesses located in the police jurisdiction will have to pay half the price of the business license fees, Norris said.

Looking toward 2008, Norris said the town plans to finish resurfacing remaining streets. "Whatever revenue we've got, there is another phase of the sewer (project) that is coming up," he said. There is also more sidewalk construction planned. "…Increases in revenue will be used for the betterment of the town."

In other action from the Tuesday night meeting, the council approved councilman Frank Martin ordering a new police vehicle, a 2008 Crown Victoria, from the state bid list at a price of $27,800. A 2006 model will be kept as a backup.
