Davis seeks relief for drought stricken farmers

U.S. Representative Artur Davis announced Monday the addition of some $600 million in agriculture disaster relief for America's farmers suffering losses in livestock or crops due to this year's drought. The aid would be attached to the omnibus spending package set for consideration this week in Congress and subject to the President's signature.

The aid would be an extension of the relief package attached to the supplemental appropriations bill passed earlier this year (P.L. 110-28, H.R. 2206). That package called for farmers to choose their worst year for losses in the past three years up to February 28, 2007. This additional aid would make losses taken on from March 1 to the end of this year eligible for consideration in the same three-year period. The additional aid would be an estimated $600 million.
