Ban assault weapons Suppose you go to Mobile Christmas shopping as many Clarke countians often do and you are window-shopping in the middle of the mall, minding your own business, when a crazed gunman opens fire. You run in terror but you and others can't escape the 100 rounds per minute coming from the AK-47 assault rifle in the hands of the madman. The last thing you feel is a hot, searing pain in your back. That's pretty much what happened in an Omaha, Neb. mall last week when disturbed and unbalanced teen-ager Robert Hawkins decided to make himself famous by killing innocent people before taking his own life. He killed eight people and wounded five more in a matter of minutes before killing himself. He had moved out of his parents' home, broken up with his girlfriend and been fired from McDonald's. He stole the AK-47 from his stepfather and carried it into the mall rolled up in a sweatshirt. Disturbed and crazy people are always going to be with us. And it is hard to detect them sometimes until they do something horrible. But if Robert Hawkins had not had an AK-47 that spits out 100 rounds per minute, this tragedy probably would not have happened. We realize that many of our readers are hunters and gun enthusiasts and we have nothing against hunting or owning guns. However, there is no good reason for anyone other than law enforcement or military personnel to own a weapon whose sole purpose is to kill people. Some would argue that someone who wants to kill will find a weapon and do so if they are intent on doing so. "Guns don't kill people, people kill people," is so true. But the right gun in the wrong hands can aid greatly in the process. Robert Hawkins might not have done the damage he did with a mere handgun, rifle or shotgun. Even the most inexperienced marksman can achieve terrible results with a military fireman that keeps firing as long as you hold the trigger.
We've never seen an AK-47 used to hunt deer or other game animals. The only trophies claimed by such weapons are human beings.
