What's that smell south of T'ville? Travelers on Highway 43 south of Thomasville have encountered a strong, strange smell for the last month. Thomasville Mayor Sheldon Day said Monday there is no mystery to the smell. It comes from liquid fertilizer that was applied to hayfields in the area. "It is some special fertilizer that was put on the hayfield that the city owns," he said. Also, "other private property owners down there sprayed fields with this sulfur-based and bio-based fertilizer. It's not harmful….It just smells to high heaven. "…We haven't had enough rain to get it set in good yet. It was put out liquid. If it was granular it would have soaked in gradually and you wouldn't have had the smell until it rained." Day said water from the sewer lagoon had actually been sprayed on the hayfield the last few days to try to cut down the smell. "It's gotten better since we had a little rain last week," said the mayor who expects the area to get some rain this week.
Day and the local gas company had received several calls about the smell. "Folks that live around the sewer lagoon said the sewer never smelled this bad," Day said.
