Must be great to be a Bulldog or a Bear
Ross Wood Sports Editor
Birmingham……. I want to wake up, in a city that never sleeps And find I'm A number one, top of the list King of the hill, A number one....

With heart-felt apologies to Frank Sinatra, but to paraphrase the old standard New York, New York…the Leroy Bears and the Sweet Water Bulldogs have got to think that the Steel City is like a second home for their football programs.

In the past four years the Bulldogs and the Bears have a combined 37-2 record, but the biggest accomplishment over that time is the three state titles each have won.

Even bigger, in the last two championship seasons the two have a combined 53-4 record. Here's the kicker. Two of the losses were the Bulldogs beating the Bears, and one loss to last year's semi-finalist Thomasville.

Back to Birmingham. Just to make it to play for one state title is impressive. It is something a whole lot of schools have never done, but these two schools have made it look like their personal playground.

Dating back to the Hurricane Ivan season in 2004 when the titles were decided at the Hoover Met, these two programs have won three times.

Leroy had a trip in 2001, but lost to Gordo, giving them a 3-1 record at the Super 6.

Not only are they winning games but the players are making the record book their own personal diary.

Each year they seem to add to the accomplishments.

Looking for an example, then look no further that Anthony Landrum. The best player in the state, in any classification, has laid claim to three MVP awards. That is a feat that likely will not be eclipsed anytime in the near future. In those three games Landrum has rushed for 529 yards and eight scores.

He has the Super 6 record for rushing TDs in a game with four, set in 2004. He also owns the TD receptions in a game with two. He did that last year when the Bulldogs whipped-up on Cedar Bluff 48-0.

Junior Quarterback Clint Moseley from Leroy rewrote the Super 6 passing records in Class 2A as he set the standard with completions (17), attempts (27), yards (243) and TD passes thrown (3).

He broke Logan Keith's, also a former Bear, yards mark, previously set at 240.

LHS wide out Patrick Rivers holds the record for catches (7) and TD catches (3).

But enough of the stats.

These two teams are benchmark type programs.

Forget everything else you know about other teams in the state.

I guarantee that every other coach looks at the success of SWHS and LHS and strives to get to that point.

And who wouldn't want to play at these schools. They have two of the best coaches in the area.

Danny Powell at Leroy and Stacy Luker at Sweet Water represent what we look for in coaches.

They are approachable to outsiders, they understand the "X's and O's" and they have the inate ability to get the most out of their players.

Granted they have been loaded with talent over the last several years, but the legacy that has started will endure.

Isn't it great to see? Two of the smallest towns in the area...in the state...and just about anyone, anywhere within these borders can tell you exactly where these schools are located...and they will tell you, if asked, just how much they DO NOT want to play them in football games. The same can be said in baseball for the Bears.

But as we close the door on a great 15-week season, congraulations are in order, not just to Leroy and Sweet Water, but to all of the schools in the area who fielded a team and played the game.

That's all folks......
