Landrum earns third MVP in championship
"I am proud of what these kids did this year, coming off a state championship last season," Coach Stacy Luker said. "Ours kids kept their focus and accomplished a lot. They are good kids and whatever we asked them to do, they did it." The Bulldog defense proved the first points of the game. But it was the punt from Antonio Landrum that set the table. He booted the ball down to the TCC 1-yard line. The Tigers moved out to their 7-yard line with the aid of a penalty but on third down the pitch to Robert Reynolds was mishandled. Johnny Lockett pounced on the ball scored on a 1-yard return. The "swinging gate" was left open by the TCC defense on the point-after try, allowing Drew Luker to toss the 2-point conversion pass to Scottie Nelson, giving SWHS an 8-0 lead with 1:48 left in the first period.
On the ensuing possession Sweet Water started at midfield, after Lockett returned the kick 28-yards. The offense stalled and was forced to punt, but on the play TCC was flagged for illegal substitution, setting up a fourth-and-one play. Anthony Landrum pounded out 2- yards, keeping the drive alive. Landrum was called on three plays later and answered with a 17-yard scoring run with 4:45 to go in the half. Nelson converted the kick and the Bulldogs had a 15-7 lead. Sweet Water's defense smelled blood on Legion Field and again stopped the Tigers cold, forcing another punt. The Bulldog offense got the ball back with enough time left to put together another scoring drive. This one ended with Luker tossing an 18- yard touchdown pass to Heath Hill. Nelson again made the kick and Sweet Water had a 22-7 stranglehold. In the second half Sweet Water added to their lead. Midway through the scoring drive Luker flipped a 29-yard completion to Nelson with the Bulldogs facing third and 21- yards to go to keep the drive alive. Landrum powered in five plays later on a 1- yard dive. The kick was no good, but the Bulldogs built a 28-7 lead with 3:54 left in the period. Late in the third quarter SWHS got the ball back when Travis Young intercepted a TCC pass. Starting at their 19-yard, Landrum found a seam through the middle of the Tiger defense, and rambled for a 72-yard gain inside the Talladega 10-yard line. Two plays later Landrum had his score of the game on a 1-yard run. The kick from Nelson was good and Sweet Water led 35-7 with no time left on the clock. Lockett closed out the game's scoring with a 38-yard sprint with 7:45 left in the game. Nelson's final attempt sailed true and Sweet Water won 42-6, capturing their second straight, third in the last four years and sixth overall championship. Anthony Landrum was named the game's MVP as he led all rushers with 212 yards on 31 carries and three scores. This was the third time he has been named the Most Valuable player in the game. The Bulldog defense limited the high-flying Tigers to 108 yards of total offense, setting a new Super 6 record. They also intercepted three passes, tying a record they had already been tied with Maplesville with.
It marks the first time since the Bulldogs have been undefeated in Luker's tenure.
