CCHS' Cross pre-season baseball All-American

Cross at bat last season for CCHS.
Clarke County High School's Hunter Cross has been chosen as the state of Alabama representative at the International High School Power Showcase Home Run Derby to be held at Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay, FL.

The second annual International HS HR Derby Finals is a showcase of the 60 "power hitting prospects," representing each of the 50 states and 10 international countries.

The showcase will begin at 10 a.m. at the home of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Jan. 5, 2008.

The players will be welcomed on Jan. 4 with a dinner in a restaurant called the Batter's Eye, which overlooks the field. The players will then receive their jerseys with their names and state abbreviation.

The representatives will receive a total of 30 outs, broken into two rounds. Each hitter will use wooden and metal bats. After all 60 have batted, the top five will advance to the championship round. Each player gets 15 outs in that round and can use either a wooden or metal bat.

Cross an Under Armour Pre-Season All- American

Cross was recently named as a 2008 Under Armour Pre-season All-American.

The All-American tournament will showcase over 200 of the top players from across the nation. Professional scouts from Baseball Factory and Team One Baseball select players for this event. Baseball Factory and Team One Baseball joined forces in 2004 and together they have scouted over 5,000 high school baseball players from across the country this year. Under Armour, the nation's leader in performance apparel, is the title sponsor and driving force behind the Pre-Season All-American Tournament.

Cross, a senior third baseman at CCHS, hopes the nomination will help propel him to a successful college and professional career. He will travel to Tuscon, Arizona and the Kino Sports Complex, Spring Training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, in order to particpate in the Under Armour Pre-Season All-American tourney on Jan. 11-13, 2008.

He has been named all-state third baseman in Class 3A the last two seasons.

He is the son of Bo and Tammy Cross of Grove Hill.
