Leadership Clarke County applies for Rural Development grant The 2007-2008 Leadership Clarke County class has applied for an $11,750 grant from Auburn University's Rural Development Initiative to help fund a countywide youth leadership rally in the spring. The Pine City Ambassadors from the City of Jackson received the first grant from the initiative last year, said Judy Graham, who has helped direct the leadership effort. In addition, as their class project, this new leadership class wants to implement a comprehensive countywide youth leadership program. Selected junior class high school students have been included in the leadership classes for the last three years, she said. "It has worked great. We thought that we would teach them something, but they ended up teaching us way more. "…These students begin to look at adults as - in a sense - peers rather than authority figures. The dynamics of it is really good." Graham is moving to a new position with Alabama Power in Mobile. She says her last official task is as initiator and organizer of the youth leadership component for Leadership Clarke County.
Overall, she said the challenge of the Leadership Clarke County program is to inspire students and adults to continue to participate and lead the effort to improve the quality of life in the county.
