Grants awarded for energy efficiency

Gov. Bob Riley has awarded $165,000 to improve energy efficiency and reduce utility costs at schools in 11 school systems.

The 11 systems were each awarded $15,000 grants. In many instances the funding will be used to make improvements at multiple schools within a system. The improvements range from replacing air conditioning units to adding insulation.

"These grants will save school systems money that can be applied toward the classroom and make schools more conducive to learning," said Riley.

School boards awarded grants are:

• Marengo County to replace six heating and air-conditioning units at Marengo County High School.

• Thomasville to add attic insulation at Thomasville High School.

• Wilcox County to replace lighting at Wilcox County High School.

Riley notified board superintendents in each system that that grants had been approved. Each system is also supplementing the grants with local funding.

The grants were awarded from a program of the U.S. Department of Energy and issued following a competitive process by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs' Energy, Weatherization and Technology Division.
