Audra Raybon, a Jackson High School teacher, was named Jackson Citizen of the Year by the Jackson Civitan Club. The Clarke County Cattleman's Association presented Sam Shields of Coffeeville with a special award for his years of service to the association and the agricultural community in Clarke County. Shields is a former president, officer and director. The Alabama Power Foundation donated $25,000 to the Southwest Alabama Birding Trail, a tourism initiative that will link bird trails throughout the state. Plans were announced to reopen the Alabama State Trooper Post in Grove Hill. Grove Hill Memorial Hospital announced that all uses of tobacco on the hospital property would be banned. Word started spreading about a massive steel mill complex for south Alabama. The mill by ThyssenKrupp AG, a German manufacturer, would later prove to be true. The Grove Hill Town Council named the 13 and 14-year-old girls softball field at Hudson Park in memory of longtime coach Sonny Gibson. The field would be dedicated on the opening day of Dixie League ball in April.
The Rev. and Mrs. Billy Cardwell announced that they were retiring and moving to their hometown of Enterprise. Cardwell had been pastor of the Magnolia Assembly of God Church for 23 years and was active in the community.
