Mobile archaeologist says he has located Mauvilla

A Mobile archaeologist generated excitement among history buffs when he said he believed he had located Mauvilla, the site of the 1540 battle between the Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto and the Mauvilla Indians. Many have long believed the site to be in southern Clarke County and Andrew Holmes thinks so too, pinpointing a site that he says matches the historical record as well as physical descriptions. He is seeking permission to excavate the site but landowners are reluctant, he said.

Clarke County governmental agencies worried about shortfalls in their budgets due to the litigation between Boise and the Clarke County Revenue Commissioner over Boise's tax bill for the Jackson paper mill. Boise is arguing that its taxes are too high. The result is a court suit and nonpayment of all of Boise's taxes until the matter is settled. The total tax bill is over $1 million.

Clarke County E-911 moved into new and larger quarters on the renovated second floor of the old courthouse in the county jail.

Clarke County Commissioners voted to raised the E-911 phone tariff to $2 per month for household land-line phones. The old rate was 75 cents a month. Businesses saw their rate edge from $1.88 to $2 per month.

Temperatures climbed in the 90s and edged over 100. Conditions were dry and have continued dry all year long, all over the state and region.

Kenneth W. Harbuck was named the new principal at Jackson High School. Harbuck, a native of Jackson and a graduate of JHS, has worked as a teacher and assistant principal at Satsuma High School since 2003.

A newborn baby was brought to the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital and left there as part of the program, "A Secret Safe Place for Newborns." The program, sponsored locally by District Attorney Spence Walker, provides shelters for mothers to surrender babies to without fear of prosecution.

Ground was broken for a new addition to the Grove Hill Public Library. Appie and Tom O'Melia contributed significantly to the project and the new space will be designated the O'Melia Family Reading Room.
