ThyssenKrupp breaks ground

Officer of Year Darrell Linder
A groundbreaking for the new ThyssenKrupp steel mill was held at the Calvert site. Breaking ground alongside ThyssenKrupp officials from Germany were Gov. Bob Riley, U.S. Sens. Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby, Congressman Jo Bonner, Mobile Mayor Sam Jones and others. Grove Hill Mayor Lamar Hudson, Jackson Mayor Richard Long and Thomasville Mayor Sheldon Day were also in attendance. They are the directors of the municipal-owned Clarke- Mobile Gas District. Clarke- Mobile is vying for ThyssenKrupp's gas contract for the new mega mill.

In another matter relating to Clarke-Mobile Gas, the settlement of a 10-year-old lawsuit was announced. Prior Energy and its owner, ICC Industries, agreed to pay Clarke-Mobile $1.5 million and to waive any right to recover $2.5 million for gas sales and interest. Clarke- Mobile's attorney explained that Prior conspired with the then manager of the utility to sell gas to Clarke-Mobile for a high rate. In addition, Prior was purchasing gas from Clarke- Mobile at a price less than it was selling it to Clarke-Mobile for.
