Area players earn all-state grid honors
Thomasville, a semi-finalist in Class 4A, had four players named to the first team in WR Tysean Thompson, DB Alex Buford and twin linebackers Katrell and Jarell Watters. Their teammate Roya Campbell was named honorable mention running back. Jackson high School defensive lineman Gabriel Mass was named as an honorable mention. Clarke County High School, which enjoyed its best season ever, had three on the first team in RB Kenneth Kimbrough, OL Ottis Jackson and DB Dwayne Owens. Kimbrough and Owens are repeat performers. Jackson won the Class 3A Lineman of the Year award recently as well. Joining them as honorable mentions were DB Bubba Frazier, LB Leevon Davis and DL Ronnie Osborne. Class 2A state champion Leroy had three first team all-state players. They were QB Clint Moseley, WR Patrick Rivers and LB Josh Ervin. Moseley was honored as the Class 2A Back of the Year.
The jauggernaught that is Sweet Water had the most of any team in the state, in any class, with eight total players on either first team or honorable mention. On the first team were RB Anthony Landrum, OL Tate Luker, OL Wes Burnett, DB Drew Luker and DL Nakia Dennis. Landrum picked up the title of Class 1A Back of the Year as well as being the runner up in the Mr. Football voting. He was also named to the Super 12 team. It is the second straight year he has been named to the list of the state's 12 best. The HM's were DB Antonio Landrum, LB Delano Brewer and DL Tyrice Lockett. Linebacker Kaylos Pritchett from Marengo High was named to the first team. Millry LB Chris Cherry and DL Aaron Mizzell were named honorable mention. Ted Reed, an OL from McIntosh was honorable mention as well. Fruitdale LB T.J. Dees was an HM too.
Clarke Prep, who reached the semifinals in the AISA, had two players on the first team. They were WR Chad Dickinson and LB Taylor Becton. J.D. Powell was an honorable mention ATH. South Choctaw Academy, who made it over the hump this year by winning the AISA Class A title, had WR Cody McIlwain and OL Austin Butler on the first team. ATH Chase Nordan and LB Jacob Sullivan were honorable mentions. Coach Charlie Taylor was named the Coach of the Year for the AISA. Wesley Meader from Patrician Academy was an HM defensive lineman. Other area players named to the allstate team were: AISA: 1st DL Alex Duiett HM: LB Andy Flowers, Marengo; QB Todd Kilpatrick, Monroe; Class 2A HM: LB Johnny Flores, Excel.
The teams were chosen during the Super 6 Championships in Birmingham.
