Daniel Duncan Monk, 28, of Duluth, Ga. died Sept. 10, 2008 from a reaction to prescription medicines.

He was born Sept. 11, 1979 in

Atlanta, Ga. He was

a 1998 graduate of Duluth High School. He played on the varsity basketball team He was a paratrooper with 173rd Airborne Brigade. He was a decorated combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received a "Key" to the City of Duluth by the mayor and city council on his safe return. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Duluth.

Survivors include his parents, Deborah Duncan Monk, John Andrew Monk and Jane Lindsey-Monk, all of Duluth, Ga.; grandmother, Elsie Rae Monk, Grove Hill; brothers and sisters, M. Andrew Monk, Juliana Monk, J. Adam Monk, Matthew H. Lindsey, David J. and Ashlea L. Soliday and a niece, Sydney Alexis Monk, many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Francis E. Monk and Dewey E. Duncan and grandmother, Alva Lee Duncan.

The service was Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Duluth with Dr. David Parker officiating. Burial was in the Duluth City Cemetery. Bill Head Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., Duluth Chapel directed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Think Big Foundation, Operation Ward 57, P.O. Box 80055, Seattle, WA 98108. This organization provides support to the veterans recovering in the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Ward 57, who have lost limbs during their military service.
