The Failure of Resolutions
Isaiah 43:19 teaches us that God is working "to do a new thing" in our lives. So why is it so hard to make changes that we need to make? Is God working against us? No, scripture teaches quite the opposite in this passage in Isaiah and in many other places. I think the answer lies in Luke 14:28, where Jesus calls us "to count the cost" of discipleship. Jesus teaches us that in discipleship as well as in warfare and building construction it is crucial to count the cost. Positive changes require that a person make sacrifices based on what his or her priorities are. A wise man once said it to me this way, "To truly say 'yes' to one important thing, you must say 'no' to a hundred lesser things." We try to keep resolutions without making sacrificial choices based on our priorities and we wind up frustrated. Whatever the resolution, from losing weight to spending more time with your family, we must recognize our limits, then choose our priorities. I challenge and encourage you to make those choices (we only have so much time) and see how God will strengthen you in your endeavors.
Otherwise, whatever is most convenient will rule our lives. God has made us for and called us to greater things than living for what is convenient.
