Blackeyed peas, turnips for New Year's day dinner
Memories & Recipes
Cindy Garrick

I hope with all my heart that everyone of you had a very Merry Christmas. I hope that all of you were able to take time to see the lights and wish on a shiny star. I am so lucky, everyone on our dirt road puts up beautiful lights every Christmas. In fact Chuck and Debra Turner love the kids in our community so much they put up a whole drive through of Christmas lights every year. If you didn't see it, you missed the wonder of your eyes.

Thank you Chuck and Debra for doing this. Now it's time to look forward to a clean, fresh new year. Of course, we all usually start the new year off right by preparing and eating the traditional foods that we've been served all of our lives on New Years Day.

I was raised with the knowledge that you must eat the black eyed peas for good health and the chosen greens for plenty of wealth. I believe in the miracle of Christmas so I certainly believe in the traditions set up in my family about the new year's meal. I used to make myself eat the greens just so I wouldn't be having to borrow a nickel from anyone at school. It must have worked because I am certainly blessed now. I never take it for granted either.

This year again, I'll say my prayers and eat plenty of greens and blackeyed peas and thank God for all that He has given me. I hope you do too!

May we all have a happy and blessed New Year.

Sammy Hutto's Turnip Greens

2 good messes (bunches)
of turnips, collards or mustard
2 ham hocks
1/4 c bacon grease
salt to your taste

Wash the greens and place them in a large boiler covered with water. Add the bacon grease, salt and ham hocks. Boil until tender, making sure the water covers the greens. Don't forget the cornbread for sopping!

Cindy's Blackeyed peas

1 bag of dry peas(1 lb)
2 ham hocks or smoked
turkey legs
1 small onion, chopped
1/2 bell pepper, chopped
3 whole cloves garlic
salt and pepper to taste

Wash and cover the peas with water; soak the peas in the water for at least one hour. Drain, rinse and place in heavy pot covered with water. Add onion, bell pepper, garlic, salt, pepper and seasoning meat of your choice. Boil continuously keeping water over the peas for at least one hour or until the peas are tender. Serve over rice with chopped onion on top or some sweet pepper relish.

Watergate Salad

2 pkgs pistachio instant
pudding
1 large tub Cool Whip
1 large jar cherries, drained
and halved
1 large can crushed
pineapple, drained

Empty pudding into pretty glass bowl, add whipped topping, cherries and pineapple. Mix well and store in refrigerator until ready to serve. Makes an easy and light dessert to your New Year's day meal. You can add more or less of each of the fruits as you like.
