'Scale Back Alabama' Weigh-In Jan. 8 at local hospital

For many people, the beginning of a new year is a time to think about starting a new physical activity program or a new diet. Starting Jan. 5, Alabama's hospitals and the Alabama Department of Public health are challenging overweight Alabamians to make a New Year's resolution to scale back.

"Scale Back Alabama is a 10- week weight loss program designed to get people thinking about becoming heathier," said Doug Sewell, administrator of the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital. "We are promoting this effort because we see the results of obesity every day in our patients in terms of higher blood pressure, increase diabetes, depression and many other illnesses that can be directly tied to obesity.

"Scale Back Alabama is about make healthier choices, and we're hoping people will have fun doing that."

The contest will allow people to compete in teams of four against teams from across the state. Team members will have an official weigh-in the second week of January and an official weigh-out in March.

All teams that lose at least 10 pounds per person (about one pound per week) will be put in the drawing for the grand prize of $1,000 per team member.

In addition, individuals who complete the 10-week contest and lose 10 pounds or more will be put in a drawing for 20 individual prizes of $250 each, even if the other team members do not reach the 10-pound goal.

Weigh-in dates will be 2 to 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 8, 9 and 11 at the Grove Hill memorial Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Department.
