Voters will go to polls lots in 2008
Presidential primary will be first on Feb. 5
By Barry H. Hendrix Managing Editor

Viewers of cable news channels have probably had their fill of presidential politics already. However, this week is just the beginning of a front-loaded, fast moving set of primaries that will likely see the two parties' presidential candidates decided by February - if not before.

The Iowa caucuses will be held Jan. 3 with the New Hampshire primary on Jan. 8.

If one believes the many polls, Sen. Hillary Clinton of New York, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois and former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, are in a statistical tie for the lead for the Democratic vote in Iowa.

Republican polls in Iowa favor former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, and Sen. John McCain.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is betting the contest will still be undecided by February.

If the candidates are not already set by the Jan. 29 and Feb. 2 South Carolina primaries, Alabama voters will get their chance with the Presidential Preference Primary Election on Feb. 5. (Twentythree states in all will hold primaries on "Super Tuesday," Feb. 5.)

Lynda Malone of Grove Hill is running as a Clinton delegate, and State Representative Thomas Jackson is on the ballot as an Obama delegate.

June 3 will be a big date for federal, state and county elections.

Three members of the Clarke County Commission will face the voters: Paul Bradford (District Two), Joe Hunt (District Four) and Rhondel Rhone (District Five).

In addition, Clarke County Superintendent Gerald Stephens is up for election as well as school board members Marty Parker (District One), Charlie Anderson (District Two) and Clinton Hawkins (District Five).

County Revenue Commissioner Chris Beverly, License Commissioner Linda Goodman and District Judge Bill Kimbrough must also face the voters.

Republican Senator Jeff Sessions is up for reelection in 2008. State Senator Vivian Davis Figures and Johnny Swanson III are so far vying for the Democratic nomination.

Republican Congressman Jo Bonner is up for reelection. Benjamin Lodmell is an announced Democratic candidate.

Democratic Congressman Artur Davis is also up for reelection.

The primary election is June 3 with a runoff (if needed) on July 15.

The general election for federal, state and county offices is Nov. 4.

The Coffeeville, Fulton, Grove Hill, Jackson and Thomasville Municipal Elections will be held Aug. 26. The mayors and council members will stand for election. The deadline for qualifying is July 15. A runoff if needed would be held Oct. 7.
