Inmate charged with con from jail
By Kathryn F. Pickard News Reporter

A Clarke County Jail inmate, and gifted con artist, and his girlfriend have been charged with committing theft of property from within the jail.

Benny Woodgett, who is a LifeTech graduate and on parole, was in jail on charges from Thomasville Police Department and according to Chief Investigator Ron Baggette, had been trying to find a way to raise $375 to pay his bond.

He was recorded calling the wife of another inmate, who is being held on rape charges. Woodgett allegedly told the woman he was a detective with the Clarke County Sheriff's Department and that her husband could be released to a halfway house if she paid a $375 bond. Several calls were made to the woman, with Woodgett allegedly telling her he was a detective.

She was instructed to send the money by a Wal-Mart money order to Vicki Pritchett, whom he claimed was head of a bonding company. Pritchett is actually Woodgett's fiancee'.

Once Pritchett received the money and paid Woodgett's bond they learned Woodgett was also being held for Pine Hill Police Department on unpaid fines of $312.50.

Another call was placed to the woman. This time she was told that because of the charges against her husband the first halfway house would not accept him, but the so-called detective had found another half-way house for her husband to be released to, but she must send another Wal-Mart money order to Pritchett in the amount of $313.

The woman sent the money and Pritchett paid Woodgett's fines and he was released.

A few days later deputies learned of the scam and arrested Woodgett and Pritchett.

Woodgett was charged with impersonating a police officer and theft of property, second degree by deception. He was also charged with another theft of property, second degree when deputies learned he had allegedly conned another inmate out of a diamond ring.

Pritchett was charged with theft of property, second degree by deception.
