Pine worms found

Calvin Guy of Coffeeville shows pine webworms he found on young pine trees on his property near Coffeeville recently. The worms are detected by clusters of debris and excrement pellets entangled in a network of silken webbing in tree limbs. Larvae can usually be found embedded in the material. The webworm usually attacks young seedlings but will infect saplings and large trees. Defoliation is usually not severe enough to kill young trees but sometimes adversely impacts growth. Guy hopes that last week's severe cold killed the worms. Photo by Jim Cox
