No winners yet The Iowa presidential caucus, from what we understand, is a cross between the way kids choose up teams for a dirt lot baseball game and a game of dodge ball. In other words, we don't understand it at all. But you would think from all the pundits last week that the one little bitty state had picked the Democratic and Republi-can presidential nominees when Barack Obama won the Democratic race and Mike Huckabee the GOP one there. And when attention turned to New Hamp-shire, the pundits were sure that Hillary Clinton would be wiped out of the Democratic contest by Obama and that John McCain would be sent packing back to Arizona by Huckabee. When Hillary teared up a little and husband Bill lashed out at the media's apparent favoritism toward Obama, the CNN and Fox News know-all commentators howled that she was a goner. But guess what? Hillary and McCain both won their parties' races in that far northern state. It all goes to show that you can't and shouldn't rely on two little bitty states to decide the presidential nominees even if they are the first to cast ballots in the 2008 race. There are still a lot of primary contests to go, including what has been termed "Super Duper Tuesday" on Feb. 5 when Alabama and over 20 other states will hold primaries. The nominees could be decided by that day, or soon aftewards.
We think the contests will boil down to Obama and Clinton on the Democratic side and McCain and Huckabee on the Republican side. But we wouldn't wager any money on that opinion at this point.
