Housing project OK'd for Grove Hill
The council voted after the town's Planning Commission approved the project earlier in the evening. The development by Trustmark Construction of Florence, Ala. will feature 42 "affordable" three-bed- room or four-bedroom rental houses and an office/community house. There will also be a fenced-in children's playground constructed on the site. There will be an on-site manager of the development. "It's not a typical subdivision," said Bill Schrimsher, project manager. "We develop this property. We own it. We manage it. "It stays in the 'Alabama Housing' program for a minimum of 15 years." The Alabama Housing Finance Authority was established in 1980 by an act of the Alabama Legislature as a public corporation to create housing opportunities for lowand moderate-income citizens. "We have to maintain it (the development). They inspect it every year. Anything they find that needs to be corrected, we correct it. "Our main goal is to build this maintenance free," Schrimsher said. "If we don't, it costs us down the road." The homes will include brick and vinyl siding. "We use 30-year architectural shingles," he said. The houses will be furnished with appliances and water and sewer service. Brumfield and Associates of Jackson, Miss. are the architects for the site, which has already been approved by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM). A similar project with 36 houses has been built in Demopolis, Schrimsher said, and all the houses have already been rented. A second development is expected to be built in Demopolis. Projected rental costs for the houses are approximately $360 (three bedroom) and four-bedroom ($450). Dirt work should begin in the next few weeks, Schrimsher said, and he told the Planning Commission construction would likely take six months. Other business In other action from the Monday council meeting, an amendment to the business license ordinance was approved. In an adjustment to the fee schedule, the "Wholesale Trade" classification (gasoline distributors) was changed from the gross receipts schedule to $150 flat. In addition, motor vehicle towing companies will pay a $50 flat license charge. • An easement was given to the Bailey-Carleton family of Mobile, owners of the Democrat Deli building, to install a central heating and cooling system. • The council made a $1,000 donation to the Child Advocacy Center, which is having a fundraising dinner Feb. 9 at the Community House in Jackson's Pearce Memorial Park. • The council also donated $500 to the Grove Hill Study Club who is sponsoring the Jan. 13 concert of the Mobile Symphony Youth orchestra in Clarke County High School's Sage Auditorium. The concert is at 2:30 p.m. • A new appointed position was approved for City Hall. The position is called Director of Accounts Payable-Technology-Special Projects. Priscilla Collingsworth was appointed to assume the full time position at $12-an-hour.
• The next town council meeting was moved to 7 p.m. on Jan. 22 due to Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday.
