Calendar The Clarke County Education Retirees Association will meet Thursday, (today), Jan. 17 at 11:45 a.m. at The Garden in Thomasville. The program will be presented by District 6 Director. Host and hostesses will be Diane Downey, Barbara Ford, James Gunn, Janice Jackson and JoAnn Stephens. Retirees also meet in Evergreen Area III, which includes The Clarke County Education Retirees Association will hold its 2008 AERA Lobbying Network Meeting Thursday, (today), Jan. 17 at 9:30 a.m. at Reid State Technical College in Evergreen. Martin Luther King activities The Fifth Annual Martin Luther King Day Motorcade and Memorial Service will be Monday, Jan. 21. Line-up will be at 9 a.m. at Gillmore Elementary School. The motorcade will start at 10 a.m. sharp. Please identify your vehicle with your church, group, business or individual name and use decorations, (posters, etc.) centered around Dr. King's birthday. For safety reasons, all vehicles must be operated by a licensed driver. After a brief motorcade through Jackson the parade will disband at Mt. Olive #2 Missionary Baptist Church. Dr. Edsel Davis, Interim Pastor, the Youth and Children's Divisions of the Association will present its annual program, "We Can't Afford To Forget." Rev. Thaddeus Douglas, Associate Minister at Mt. Olive #2 will speak. All members are urged to attend. Cattlemen's steak dinner set The Clarke County Cattlemen's Association will hold its annual steak dinner meeting Saturday, Jan. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Clarke Preparatory School in Grove Hill. Dr. Billy Powell, executive vice president of the Alabama Cattlemen's Association will be the guest speaker. He is a native of Leroy. Historical Society meets The Clarke County Historical Society will meet Sunday, Jan. 27 at 2:30 p.m. at the Grove Hill Town Hall. The guest speaker will be Dr. Jim Herod with the Grove Hill Writers Group. Dr. Herod is a member of a committee writing a play about Fort Sinquefield. The fort, located west of Whatley, was the site of an attack during the Creek Indian War in 1813. The public is invited to attend. Send in your items for the community calendar.
