Sprucing up town On the opposite page you will find several photographs of empty Grove Hill storefronts that are for sale. We would venture to say that more commercial property is on the market or vacant than ever before in the town's 176-year history (we date from 1832 when the county seat was moved here from Clarkesville). We don't know what the answer to Grove Hill's stagnation (we hate to say decline) is, but we would offer if some of these available buildings were spruced up just a little- maybe nothing more than cutting the grass- they might at least appear more appealing for a sale. The Town Council should address the deplorable conditions of some of these vacant buildings. We did not include pictures of the worst eyesores in town- we've run those several times with no apparent influence on the owners or town officials. The last time the town evoked its hazardous building ordinance was on some old houses belonging to an old woman far off the main thoroughfare. That problem needed addressing but there are others that are seen by a larger number of people in more traveled parts of town that need attention also.
Ordinances are on the books to deal with dilapidated and overgrown buildings. They just need to be enforced.
