OUR BODY: The Universe Within
Display covers 7,500 square feet OUR BODY: The Universe Within is an educational exhibit that features real human bodies. Spanning more than 7,500 square feet, this human anatomy lesson is comprised of 12 whole-body specimens and 75 anatomical displays that have been preserved through polymer impregnation. Sometimes referred to as plastination, polymer impregnation replaces water and fat with reactive plastics that prevent decomposition. The relatively new process, developed three decades ago, maintains the integrity of human specimens - organs, veins and muscles -- and provides a spectacularly illustrative study of the human body. "The Exploreum is especially excited to provide this educational opportunity to area students," said Ilka Porter, education coordinator of the Gulf Coast Exploreum. "Not only does this exhibition follow our mission, to increase science literacy, but it also provides curriculumrelevant material that cannot be experienced in the classroom." Appropriate for all ages, OUR BODY: The Universe Within literally goes 'under the skin' to unveil the splendor of the human body and the systems at work every second of our existence. By examining the human body from a perspective formerly reserved for medical professionals, people of all ages and backgrounds can gain a deeper understanding of the intricate relationship between each of the body's systems and a greater appreciation for their own bodies. Three-dimensional views of healthy versus diseased tissues and organs vividly demonstrate the profound impact daily choices have on quality of life. Art, history detailed also In addition to the illuminating specimens on display, OUR BODY: The Universe Within is enhanced by areas devoted to education about the history, art and science of anatomy, ranging from the insights of "The Father of Anatomy," Vesalius, to the contributions of worldrenowned artist Leonardo da Vinci. Audiences will discover how the body's complexity has influenced generations of artists and scientists. The Gulf Coast Exploreum's 2008 spring lineup includes human health programming throughout the facility. In the Hearin-Chandler Virtual Journeys Digital Theater, located adjacent to Minds On Hall, audiences don 3D glasses and embark on a trip through one or more of the body's systems. Visitors can reach out and (try to) touch red blood cells as they chart a course through the circulatory system; zip up the spinal cord to the control center of the body; or follow a food particle through the digestive system. The Virtual Human 3D experience is included in the price of admission. Movies feature, brain, human body In the J.L. Bedsole IMAX DOME Theater, the human brain is the star of National Geographic's Wired to Win. This large-format film follows two elite cyclists as they compete in the Tour de France, overcoming pain, fear and fatigue in pursuit of the yellow jersey and, ultimately, glory. Also showing in the only domed IMAX theater on the Gulf Coast: The Human Body, a winner of Best Film for Lifelong Learning that documents a day in the life of the human body and the miraculous systems that keep the body running at full steam from morning until night.
OUR BODY: The Universe Within will be on display- seven days a week- through May 11, 2008. Advance tickets are now on sale at the Exploreum Box Office and online at www.exploreum.com. Prices are $10 for members; $20 for adults; $18 for seniors (ages 60+) and youth; and $17 for children (ages 2-12). Admission includes access to OUR BODY: The Universe Within as well as the Exploreum's Hands on Hall, Wharf of Wonder, Minds on Hall, Ciba Lab and Digital Journeys Virtual Theater. For $5 more, visitors can add an IMAX film to their 'BODY' experience.
