Community Study Club meetings highlighted The fall quarter of 2007 was an interesting and busy time for members of the Community Study Club of Grove Hill. The September meeting was held in the home of Mrs. Virginia Harrigan with Mrs. Jean Butts as co-hostess. Mrs. Catherine Neal, program chairman, introduced Mrs. Jane Williamson, education chairman of the Mobile Opera, who gave a delightful review of "La Traviota" and told of other upcoming events. In October at the home of Mrs. Sherry Hamilton with Mrs. Kate Huggins as co-hostess, Mrs. Vivian Gilmore gave a spirited report of club activities and accomplishments beginning with 1965, the year she was invited to join the club. The club initiated noon meetings in November with a luncheon in the Grove Hill United Methodist Church. Mrs. Andrea Powell and Mrs. Shelia Steen were co-hostesses. Dr. Ed Sellers, Grove Hill's veterinarian, presented an interesting program about diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans and from humans to animals. The Reverend Dave Rhodes shared childhood memories about Alabama Federated Club activities when his mother was president of the state organization. Each month President French Downey presided at the business sessions. In September Mrs. Powell distributed blind-made goods catalogs and original order blanks. In two months she delivered ordered items to the members. Miss Marion Bumpers reminded the club that Pioneer Day would be held at the Clarke County Historical Museum in November and asked the members to bake or contribute canned goods for the bake sale. Later she thanked the club for the great response and reported that $967.50 was collected. The club provided and served refreshments at the dedication of the O'Melia Family Room in the Grove Hill Public Library on Dec. 9, 2007. Mrs. Neal reported that the Community Thanksgiving service was well attended. President Downey gave a report of the club's trip to Flowerwood Nursery. She reminded members to attend the annual tree-lighting activities at the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital on Dec. 13. Mrs. Gilmore encouraged the members to join the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and attend the meetings on the fourth Wednesday of each month. Mrs. Harrigan announced that the Mobile Symphony Youth would once again bring the magic of live music to the community in January. She worked with committee members to plan materials and activities to inform music lovers in the county. At the last meeting Mrs. Appie O'Melia reported that art instructors from the Mobile Museum of Art will work with students in the public and private schools in Grove Hill during 2008.
The first meeting in the new calendar year will be held on Jan. 15 at the Southern Magnolia Restaurant at 6:30 p.m.
