2007 Southwest Alabama All-Region Football Team
Landrum, Moseley, Watters tops in region
By Ross Wood

Imagine how hard it will be to take the role as the player who follows Anthony Landrum at Sweet Water High School.

In a town like Sweet Water state championships are not hoped for every year, but are expected. The signs in front of the school let everyone know just how many they have won.

The senior has been named MVP of three state title games, been named the 1A Back of the Year, runner up for Mr. Football and that doesn't even count his offensive output.

In one of the most storied high school careers in this area Landrum has amassed 7,033 yards on the ground and scored 114 touchdowns. In 2007 he had 2,103 yards and 39 scores.

But to understand what Landrum meant to the team from SWHS look no farther than his work when it counted...the playoffs.

In his playoff career that includes three state titles, he had 3,679 yards, almost half of his total numbers and scored 50 touchdowns.

Against their toughest foes (4A runner-up Thomasville, 2A state champ Leroy and 2A powerhouse American Christian) he had over almost 400 yards combined and seven scores.

The overall season numbers could easily have been higher but in six games he was on the sidelines well before the second half began.

"It is all about the senior leadership on this team and that starts with players like Anthony," Coach Stacy Luker said.

"This one is the sweetest because it came during my senior year," Landrum said. "But without all of my teammates doing what they do, none of the these awards mean anything. A championship is what it all comes down to."

Since his showing in the big games during his career, Landrum has been dubbed as one of the state's best prospects, but none of that is anywhere on his radar.

"That senior class he is a part of will be missed," Luker said. "They will leave as the winningest in school history."

His play this year and over the past four is the main reason Landrum has been named the Southwest Alabama Player of the Year.

Moseley named Offensive POY

Winning is contagious. At least that is the case in the town of Leroy, specifically between the football and baseball programs. In 2006 both units claimed Class 2A titles.

One of the constants from each team was Clint Moseley. As a sophomore he came out of nowhere to lead the Bears to the football title in just his first year as the starting quarterback.

Last year the lanky signal caller had the raw tools, but also had a great supporting cast on both the offensive line and at the other skill positions.

"In the spread offense my job has been easy," he said. "I just have to get the ball to my receivers and let them make something happen."

"One of my favorite things about this offense is the downfield blocking of the receivers and how unselfish everyone has played," he added.

The junior, in leading the Bears to their second straight state title completed 186 of 269 passes for 3,255 yards with 26 TDs and just six interceptions. That is an improvement of over 1,000 yards and better TDto INT ratio that was 17-7 last year.

An added dimension is his running. He is the team's leading rusher with 745 yards on 133 carries and 11 scores.

"Clint has a great arm, but he has really good speed," Coach Danny Powell said. Powell is the same coach for both baseball and football programs. "He has worked as hard as anyone and is getting better this season."

With the types of numbers Moseley has put up this season, his name has been cropping up as one of the top QB prospects for next year and it is the reason he is the SW Alabama Offensive Player of the Year. Watters named Defensive POY

Coaches in Class 4A, Region 1 are breathing a collective sigh of relief as they look towards the coming season in 2008.

It will be one of the toughest regions in the state, but for the opponents of Thomasville High School the thought of not seeing number 55 roaming the field will be a welcome dsight.

Number 55 is Katrell Watters and he has made opposing offenses wish they had taken the field against someone else for the past two seasons.

The senior, who was a finalist for the Class 4A Lineman of the Year award, led the Tigers on defense with 114 tackles as well as two fumble recoveries and a blocked kick for a TD.

"Having a player like Katrell out there on the field can make any coach look like a genius," Coach Jack Hankins said. "He makes the plays and he makes sure people are where they are supposed to be. Katrell just has a great nose for the football."

This year the Tigers started the season in the top 5 rankings and fought their way through a brutal schedule that included losses to top-ranked Sweet Water and longtime county rival Clarke County.

"Those two losses were not against a weak team," he said. "They were good football teams. We wanted to win, but we took something from the loss. We learned about focus.

"You can always take something away from a loss," he added. "You can get better but you also remember that you don't want to have that feeling again."

His twin brother Jarell has over 110 tackles to form a powerful tandem that will continue to be force. Only now it will be at UAB.

Watters' ability to anchor one of the area's toughest defenses is the reason he has been named the SW Alabama Defensive Player of the Year.

Whitsett Top Newcomer

Millry enjoyed their best season in school history in 2007. They went 10-0 in the regular season for the first time ever.

The Wildcats made a transformation on offense that allowed for a big part of that success. Formerly they were a "3-yards and a cloud of dust" team, but now they are more wide-open.

That allowed Dylan Whitsett to throw for almost 1,700 yards and 13 scores and he is just a sophomore.

That translates into the possibility of being one of the state's top QB prospects in a few seasons.

His play pushed him ahead of the rest of the pack as the top newcomer in SW Alabama in 2007.
